The Magical Allure of Balsam

themagicalallureofbalsam

I am still thanking Pedro, even days later and probably will until the tree comes down.  After all, that delicious smell of a fresh Christmas tree greets me every morning when I get my coffee and immediately, it puts a smile on my face!  For me, that balsam smell is associated with the thrill and child-like anticipation that comes during the Christmas season, most specifically for me on Christmas morn.  Even as a parent, there is a thrill of anticipation upon waking Christmas morning!  It’s that joy of giving.  That joy of family and love that permeates every moment.  It’s just being grateful for all of the blessings in our lives.  It’s the magic in the spirit of Christmas!

I’m grateful for being here every day, but especially upon waking on Christmas morning with my children.  It’s innate within me.  I am like a child, fully excited when it comes to Christmas.  I’ve always been this way, ever since I was little.

The smell of a fresh tree immediately brings me back to being a little girl, waking up on Christmas morning and seeing those presents under the tree.  If I sit quietly, I can easily remember that joyful feeling along with the thrill and magic of how Santa brought us presents while we were sleeping.  It wasn’t ever a lot of presents, but just the right amount.  It was in the excitement of anticipation of what’s inside the prettily decorated wrappings that charged me up!  It was also, as I got older, the happy anticipation of giving special presents to those whom I loved.  Finding that special trinket or sweater or special toy that couldn’t be found anywhere and delivering it to my loved ones with joy for knowing that they would be happy!

Christmas is about family being together on Christmas morning.  Waking up, sleepy with joyful anticipation for what Santa (ahem Mom) brought and what thoughtful gifts each of us in turn have gotten each other.  It doesn’t have to be a big deal.  It’s about giving the Presents of Presence to each other.  Being there, in that priceless moment of glee that’s filled with love and family.

What about you?  Does the smell of a fresh cut tree bring back memories of childhood Christmases and the anticipation of presents magically appearing under the tree for you too?

Shine On!

What Does Christmas Mean To You?

whatdoeschristmasmeantoyou

In a month’s time, Christmas will be over.  Can you believe it?  Have you started decorating or shopping yet?  Have you felt the excitement in twinkling lights and frosty weather?  I am a Christmas lover as you can probably tell.

I like simplicity during Christmas.  I love to put up the creche and remember what the holiday is truly about – love and peace.  The warmth of a roaring fire and loving family surrounding me fills my heart with gratitude for life itself.  Peace and love hopefully will reign supreme this holiday season with human kindness spreading its gentle wings upon the earth.  At least that’s what I’m praying for this year.

I love to go to church during the Christmas season and sing all of the old hymns.  When I was younger, I was in the church choir and I adored singing at Christmas masses more than any other time of year.  The magic of Christmas love has stayed with me even though I’m older.  I’ve never quite lost that childhood wonder and Christmas spirit.

Even as a child, I didn’t wanted to grow up during Christmas.  I never told my parents when I stopped believing in Santa as I loved the magic of Christmas morning and I still do!  I don’t know why I’ve always been so enraptured with Christmas.  It’s just innate in me.  I often wonder if I should move to a Christmas village and live there year round or if by doing that, it would make me jaded for my favorite holiday?  Do any of you live in a Christmas village?  Can you tell me what it’s like to have Christmas everyday?

So back to my original question, what does Christmas mean to you?  Sleigh bells ringing?  Snow falling gently on the ground?  Merry moments with family and friends?  Hot toddies by the fire with a special person?  Wrapping special presents to delight and show our love for others?  Unwrapping special trinkets bought by others with us in mind?  Showing the sanctity of the holiday?  Feeling grateful for all that we have?  Sharing what we have with others through giving?  Blessing others and sharing our heartlights?  Surrounding ourselves with peace and love?  Forgiving the past and sharing The Presents of Presence?

Please share with me!

Shine On!

Never Stop Believing in Santa

santa

I remember when I was in 8th grade (14 years old).  My mom came into my bedroom just a few days before Christmas.  She was in a serious mood that day and I remember thinking, “Uh oh, I’m in trouble.”

She asked to sit on the bed with me so that we could have a special talk.  I nodded, not sure what this was all about at all.  Did I get a bad grade?  Did I forget to unload the dishwasher?  Taking my hands in hers and turning to face me, she looked gently into my eyes.

“Yvonne, I have something to tell you.  I know you may feel disappointed, but you need to know that your sister (who is 3 years younger) came to me this morning after breakfast and told me that she didn’t believe in Santa.  She told me that she knew that Santa was actually Dad and me,” the words flew out of her mouth in a visible flurry.

She took a breath and then just stared at me, waiting for my reaction.

“I know Mom,” I quietly said to her as she squeezed my hand.

“You did?”  The breath she was holding suddenly whooshed from her.  I realized she had been nervous to tell me.  She thought she was breaking the news to me.  “But you never told me.  Honey you’ve been acting like you believed in Santa and I was worried.  I didn’t want to be the one to tell you, but now that your sister has told me that she knows, well…I just couldn’t allow you to go on believing.  Why children would make fun of you!”  She giggled nervously, much relieved to hear that she would not be known as the ‘Mom who told her child that there is no Santa Claus.’

“But why didn’t you tell me that you knew?”

“Because Sissy still believed and I love all the Christmas Spirit that believing in Santa brings to our house.  Why would I tell anyone that I knew when it was fun to get caught up in the magic of Christmas?  I didn’t want to ruin it for Sissy or for me quite frankly.  It was more fun to pretend to believe.”

“Oh you are such a little Mommy to your sister.  Of course you knew.  You were just pretending.  I get it.  Ok then,” she squeezed my hands again, kissed my cheek and started to get up smiling.

“But Mom, can we pretend to believe anyway?”

“Sure, I guess so.  No harm in that.  Just don’t tell anyone,” she replied.

True story…but I never stopped believing and below are the reasons why…please indulge me…

Because I would love for Christmas to last all year long.  I love singing Christmas carols and the old hymns in church on Sunday.  They are my favorite songs by far.  I love the frosty cold, so that I have to snuggle up in my footie pajamas at night under the covers.  I love to watch the way the snow falls gently to the ground at night under the outside light.  I love how snow falls in all different ways.  I love the magic that Christmas brings us all, that spirit of giving, the spirit of friendship, and most of all, the spirit of love.  I love that most people act happy around Christmas.  We get together with friends and family whom we haven’t seen in awhile.  Everyone seems joyful, even Santa who says ho ho ho!  I love to give special presents, knowing that the gift is in the giving even when the gift is small.  Not to mention, I love to receive gifts and to unwrap them with enthusiastic anticipation!  I love to sit down with our family to eat a delicious meal slowly and with great gusto.  I love that we all take time to just be with each other instead of rushing about for work and school.  I love the white lights on the Christmas tree and the tradition of decorating it with the old ornaments from our ancestors.  I love setting up the creche with the little manger animals and being able to move them around and seeing the angels who watched over them all.  I loved the train set that my Dad used to set up around the tree every year.  I loved imagining I was the conductor, stopping and starting the Lionel engine and 3 cars.  I love hanging the stockings from the mantle hooks.  I love the smell of fresh baked cookies and how they seem to melt in my mouth, bending with warmth.  I love imagining that I can have whatever I ask Santa for ~ world peace, a loving relationship, being debt-free, helping others, good health, the ability to shine my essence for all to see and to honor and love every person I meet.  I love the greenery of Christmas, sparkling red and green, silver and gold (remember the song?), and watching the Christmas specials on television at night.  I love to listen to the superb silence on a cold winter’s night, imagining that I hear sleigh bells in the distance.  I love how so many people say, “Happy Holidays” and “Merry Christmas” with a smile.  I love the generosity of gratitude that is shown at this time of year.  I adore writing and receiving Christmas cards!  I put them up on my refrigerator for all to see how the kids have grown over the year.  I love to hear from old friends and new friends, catching up on life.  I love the magic of flying reindeer and how the red nose of one became a shining gift of light!  Thanks Rudolf!  I love the candlelight of Christmas decorations.  I love the sparkles and the enticing scent of a real balsam tree.  I love to pick out special gifts for others at Christmastime.  I love to have the store wrap the gifts for me.  I love to choose a special moment each morning to just be peacefully grateful in my home.  Best of all, I love all of the blessings bestowed on us everyday, but especially at Christmas.

What about you?

Shine On!

Christmas All Year Long…

Christmas is a little bit of home that we hold in our hearts

Have you noticed that a few blogs have snow gently falling?  How cool is that?  Thanks WordPress as the virtual snow just raised my spirits up a notch!  My heartfelt thanks to my blogger friend David at http://davidkanigan.com/  for kindly letting me in on the way to make it snow!  FYI:  You should stop by and see him as well ~ he’s a master of cool stuff!

I love snow, don’t you?  Watching it gently fall outside while I”m cozy and nestled warmly inside?  Ahh…it’s beginning to feel a bit like Christmas…and it feels so good!  Now if the Jersey weather would just be less tropical, I’d be happy!  I know, I know, there’s time for cold ~ I agree…but a nip in the air would make it feel more like Christmas!

Lucky for me, I found this card last night when I was working and when I found this one, I knew that I had to use it for my inspiration.  You see, for me, it brings up the possibility that if we were to keep that little bit of home in our hearts all year long, we could make the Christmas Spirit last all year long…how wonderful would that be?  Can you imagine it?  Wouldn’t you like it?  A bit of holiday spirit everyday?!

In my search for a good  follow up to yesterday’s post, I checked out the newest cards to find one as my inspiration.  You may not know that most of the images that I feature in my blog are actual cards from my business which I use to springboard my blog post ~ hopefully bringing to you, a bit of inspiration.  If the picture/card is not from the card catalog, then it’s one that I made in about 5 minutes from my own photo and the templates/elements of the free system.  If you want to try it for yourself, you can click below…
