Imagine going out to your mailbox and nestled in with the bills and junk mail you find a white envelope. Hmm, it’s not your birthday. It’s not a holiday. But it’s addressed to you. Before you even look through the bills, you are opening that envelope. And out pops the card above! How do you feel? Are you smiling? Do you feel appreciated ~ special ~ happy that someone took the time to say hello and to brighten your day? It’s a priceless feeling, isn’t it?
To me, sending an unexpected card in the mail to someone makes me happy ~ it gives the recipient a priceless feeling of warmth, of joy and of appreciation. It takes 5 minutes to send a card in the mail, but it makes a big difference in another person’s day. In fact, cards have been known to arrive with perfect timing ~ coincidence?
So why don’t we send cards if it’s so heartwarming to do for the sender and priceless for the recipient?
1. You have to spend time/money on transportation to the store.
2. You are limited by the hours the store is open.
3. We forget, we are busy people.
4. We can’t find a card we like after wasting time standing there in the aisle reading card after card.
5. We don’t like spending so much money on a card which can cost up to $6.99 per card plus postage.
6. You find the perfect card, only to not like what it says! Yikes. Back to square one…keep looking.
7. Darn it, I forgot to buy stamps!
8. And where’s my address book?

I love snail mail!! I love getting actual cards and letters in my mail box!! And I love sending cards and letters as well! I have many many times made my own cards and written one of my poems on them and then just posted it to random people 🙂 I mean I have just picked a name in the phone book and sent them a special home made card with an uplifting or mysterious poem 🙂 I never write who it is from so I don’t know how their reactions have been, but I feel so happy and joyful when I think about those people opening a mysterious letter from a complete unknown….hihihihihihi!!! 😀 I have also hidden poems in library books or in menus in restaurants! 😀 Hihihihi, I just love thinking about people’s faces when they find my poems!! and they have no idea who it is from!! 😀 Cause I never write my name on anything….:-) 🙂 It will be a mystery! 🙂

Oh, can I tell you something else….I am just bursting to tell you!! So I must just tell you. Once when I was walking home from a sleepover at a friend’s house (it was early Sunday morning and the aftermath of Saturday partying) I found a credit card, a key chain with keys and a whole lot of coins lying on the sidewalk. I picked it up and brought it home with me, when I came home I saw the name on the credit card and I found his address in the phone book. The address was only an hour and a half walk away from where I lived (I don’t drive), so I made a plan. I found a white envelop and put all the coins, credit card and keys in it, and sealed it. Then I found lots of magazines and newspapers and I cut out differently shaped letters eventually making up the sentence: “Do you believe in the extraordinary? ” Then I pasted this writing onto the front of the envelope. Then I found a map and walked to where the address was, I found the right house and dropped the envelop in the mailbox. 🙂 🙂 I laughed so much on the way home, I had to skip and hop and run I was so full of energy. Still now, remembering this story I laugh and laugh 😀 😀 😀 Can you imagine the look on that guy’s face when he checks his mail and finds all his belongings safely tucked inside that envelop!!!! 😀 HIHIHIHIHIHIHI!!! 😀

I’ve just started sending cards again (well I’ve only sent 2) but my daughter was thrilled; seeing my handwriting made her cry. I’m going to try to send 1 card a month as my 5 priorities for 2014 include my tribe.

My partner Sara participated in an international postcard exchange with other photographers for about a year. She LOVED it. Unfortunately, we don’t have home mail delivery here in Ecuador, so thank God for email. However, I’m with you. There’s nothing like an old fashioned card or letter.
